Is Jev AI Free? Where to Use Jev AI Free, and What It Costs After

Is Jev AI free? Not at scale, but there are free ways to try it. Where Jev AI is free today, what TypeSafe charges, and what real calls cost.

Type "is jev free" into Google and the suggestions are about whether the Japanese encephalitis vaccine is free on the NHS. That is JEV, the virus. You want the other Jev — the AI model from TypeSafe — and the answer to a practical question: can you use it without paying, and if not, how big is the bill going to be?

The short version: Jev AI is not free to run at volume, but it is cheap, and there are still free ways to try it. What changed recently is that TypeSafe itself stopped giving free credits to new signups on September 27, 2026, so most "Jev AI free" pages written in launch week are now wrong.

We run jev-ai.org, a playground and API built on the Jev model, and we sell access to it, so we have every reason to be precise about what is free and what is not. This guide is based on TypeSafe's published price, its announcements, OpenRouter's listing, our own plans, and six production-shaped calls we measured on our own account. By the end you will know exactly where Jev AI is free today, what a single decision costs, and which route is cheapest for your volume.

Last updated September 30, 2026. Prices and free credits are changing during early access; the official pages linked below are the source of truth.

If you are not yet sure what Jev AI is or whether it suits your task, start with that guide; this one is about money.

Is Jev AI Free? The Short Answer

WhereWhat is freeWhat you pay after
TypeSafe consoleNothing for new signups since September 27, 2026$0.042 per million input tokens; output tokens free
OpenRouterNo free allowance listed for Jev$0.042 per million input tokens listed; output free
jev-ai.orgEditing the playground (no account); five welcome credits; daily check-in creditsToken plans or one-time packs

So: Jev is free to try, and nearly free to run per call, but nobody is offering free production volume right now.

Where to Use Jev AI for Free

On jev-ai.org

This is the only place we know of where you can run Jev today without paying anything.

  • No account needed to explore. The Jev AI playground loads nine scenarios you can edit freely — state, questions and model — without signing in.
  • Five free credits to run. Signing in adds five welcome credits once your email is verified and anti-abuse checks pass. No card is asked for.
  • Daily check-in. Checking in adds more free credits to the same balance.
  • One credit per run. A playground run costs one credit, whatever the size of the text (up to the 32,000-token input limit). A batch row costs one credit too.
  • The API can use them. An API call normally spends purchased tokens, but when you have none it falls back to one credit per call — so the free credits also cover your first few API requests.
  • Failed runs are free. A request that does not return an answer is not charged.

Five credits is five decisions, not a free tier. It is enough to check whether Jev answers your question well — which is exactly what you should find out before paying anyone.

On TypeSafe directly

When TypeSafe dropped its waitlist on September 20, every new account started with $5 in credit, which TypeSafe put at about 120 million tokens. That lasted about a day: signups were paused on September 21, and when they reopened on September 27 TypeSafe said new signups no longer get free credits, adding that it hopes to bring them back. The whole sequence is in our Jev waitlist timeline.

If you created your account during that window, check your console balance; TypeSafe has not said existing credits were withdrawn.

On OpenRouter

OpenRouter lists typesafe/jev-1.13 at $0.042 per million input tokens and $0 for output. Its model page includes a playground, but running it requires signing in, and calls draw on your OpenRouter credits.

Rule of thumb: use free credits to answer "does Jev get my question right?", not "can I run my workload for free?" The first takes five calls. The second, today, costs money everywhere.

How Much Will Jev AI Cost? The Real Numbers

Jev is billed on one thing: input tokens — the state, your questions and the model's own scaffolding. Output tokens are counted but never billed. TypeSafe's list price is $0.042 per million input tokens, or $42 per billion.

That abstract rate is hard to picture, so here are six real calls. On September 25, 2026 we sent six production-shaped requests to jev-1.13 (build jev-1.13-20260917) through OpenRouter, each with several typed questions. The cost column is exactly what the API reported.

WorkloadInput tokensCost of one call
Answer grading795$0.00003339
Intent routing539$0.00002264
Citation check594$0.00002495
Entity matching761$0.00003196
Agent run review901$0.00003784
Web page triage794$0.00003335

At TypeSafe's list price, one decision cost between two and four thousandths of a cent. A million decisions of these sizes would come to roughly $23–$38 in model charges.

Two things follow from how the bill is built:

  • Extra questions are nearly free. The state is read once no matter how many questions ride along — up to 20 per call on jev-ai.org — so asking four things about one ticket costs little more than asking one.
  • Long states are what cost money. A 30,000-token document costs roughly 40 times a 750-token ticket. Trimming the state is the only lever that really moves the bill.

What most "Jev AI free" pages leave out

The pages ranking for this question tend to stop at "free playground" or "$5 credit". Three things they skip:

  1. The signup credit ended. Most were written before September 27.
  2. A free run and a cheap run are different units. A jev-ai.org credit is one run of any size; a token is a token. Five credits buy five decisions; $1 of tokens at TypeSafe's list price buys roughly 24 million input tokens.
  3. Where you buy changes the per-token price a lot. The next table shows by how much.

Direct, OpenRouter or jev-ai.org: Which Is Cheapest for You?

Here is what each route charges for the same workload: 50,000 decisions of about 800 input tokens each, or 40 million input tokens. Prices are as listed on September 30, 2026.

RoutePrice basis40M input tokens costs
TypeSafe direct$0.042 per million input tokens$1.68
OpenRouter$0.042 per million listed$1.68 in OpenRouter credits
jev-ai.org Creator Yearly$174 a year for 720M tokens ($0.24 per million)about $9.60 of the year's tokens
jev-ai.org Creator$29 a month for 60M tokens ($0.48 per million)$29 that month, 20M tokens carried over
jev-ai.org 75M Token Pack$39 once for 75M tokens that never expire40M of the $39 pack; 35M left

Read plainly: for raw API volume, TypeSafe direct and OpenRouter tie as the cheapest per token. Our plans cost more per token. What they buy is the workbench around the model: a browser playground you can hand to a non-developer, CSV batch scoring, per-key daily budgets, token and credit ledgers, tokens that roll over, and free credits to test before you pay. If you just need a key and a curl command, go direct.

Will Jev Stay This Cheap?

Nobody outside TypeSafe knows, but two things are on the record. On its homepage FAQ, TypeSafe says it can serve Jev profitably at current prices, and that its goal is to make intelligence more affordable over time. In other words, the $0.042 list price is not presented as a launch subsidy.

What is clearly not settled is everything around the price: free credits are suspended, rate limits are still adjusting, and there is only one model version so far. Budget on today's per-token price, but re-check free credits and limits before you plan a launch around them.

Five Ways to Keep Your Jev Bill Near Zero

  1. Ask many questions per call. Up to 20 questions share one read of the state.
  2. Send only the text the decision needs. Strip signatures, boilerplate and repeated context before it becomes state.
  3. Let failures cost nothing. On jev-ai.org a request that does not return an answer is never charged, so retry on errors instead of padding requests "just in case".
  4. Cap each key. On jev-ai.org each key carries its own daily decision budget, so a runaway script cannot drain the balance your production path needs.
  5. Pin the model while you tune. Use jev-1.13 rather than jev-latest so a new build does not shift your thresholds and force a re-test.

FAQ

Is Jev free?

The Jev AI model is not free to run at volume, but you can try it free on jev-ai.org. If your search for "is jev free" turned up vaccine pages, those are about JEV, the Japanese encephalitis virus.

Does TypeSafe have a free trial for Jev?

Not for new signups right now. TypeSafe gave $5 of credit to accounts created when the waitlist ended on September 20, 2026, and stopped doing so for signups from September 27.

Do I need a credit card to try Jev on jev-ai.org?

No. Editing the playground needs no account, and running it uses the free credits you get after email verification. A card is only needed to buy a plan or a pack, and checkout runs on Stripe.

Are output tokens really free?

Yes. Jev returns short typed answers rather than generated text, and both TypeSafe and jev-ai.org bill input tokens only. Output tokens appear in the usage numbers but are not charged.

Do free credits expire?

Check-in credits do: each daily check-in claim expires 30 days after you claim it. Purchased tokens on jev-ai.org carry over while your account is active, and one-time packs never expire. Credits work separately from tokens; your account page shows both ledgers.

Is there a free, open-source alternative?

Open-source projects reproduce the decision-model interface on open models you host yourself: no per-token bill, but you pay for the hardware and live with that model's quality ceiling. Our Jev vs OpenJev comparison covers when self-hosting beats a hosted API.

The Bottom Line

Jev AI is not free, but it is priced so that "free" matters less than usual: a typical decision costs a few thousandths of a cent at TypeSafe's list price.

  • Free today: editing the jev-ai.org playground, five welcome credits and daily check-ins.
  • Not free any more: TypeSafe's signup credit, suspended for new accounts since September 27, 2026.
  • What you pay: input tokens only — $0.042 per million at TypeSafe and on OpenRouter, more per token on jev-ai.org in exchange for the workbench.
  • What moves the bill: the size of the state, not the number of questions.

The cheapest useful first step costs nothing. Run a decision on your own text with the free credits, check whether the probabilities agree with you, and only then pick a route to pay for.
